CHIANTI: THE WINE AND THE LAND
A Wine-Tasting at Fonterutoli
For visitors lodging or transiting in the Chianti Valley, this visit affords an understanding and appreciation of the magnificent wine production so integral to the life and culture of the Chianti area. The noble Mazzei family has been producing fine vintages on their extensive land holdings outside of Castellina in Chianti since 1435 and today can boast some of the most prestigious wines produced in the whole of Italy. Having recently opened a state-of-the-art tasting facility convenient to the main route through the area, a very memorable visit can now be made which includes a walk through the charming borgo – or wine-makers’ village – in the company of a knowledgeable guide who will inform you with interesting tales of the history of the family. Enjoy visits to the barriccaia – or historic cellars – and the Archivio Storico where a fascinating collection of ancient bottles, equipment and wine memorabilia brings the history and tradition of wine-making to vivid life. Culminate with a tasting that includes five wines – including the unique Zisola produced on the family’s Sicilian estates as well as their traditional grappa.
