This delightfully slow-paced residential island – so different from tourist-thronged Venice - is a photographer’s paradise: each of the charming fishermen’s houses is decorated in a brilliant color and each is different from the next. Less than an hour from San Marco but truly a world away… Have free time to shop for bargains in charming shops featuring the island’s gorgeous lace production. Next is Torcello – where Venice truly began. See the magnificent Byzantine mosaics in the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta and sit on the throne reputed to have belonged to Attila the Hun. The heartier may wish to climb to the top of the Campanile for a splendid bird’s-eye view over the lagoon.
